This evening I got to catch up with my good friend Selwyn Muru who I drew a portrait of the other night. It really made my day to spend some quality time with him. He has dementia and I was so happy I caught him at a time where he remembered me and my name.
I remember when I first moved to Auckland as a young art student I saw Selwyn’s Waharoa (gateway) at the Aotea Centre and my first thoughts were “what the heck is that?” I thought it was like alien and ugly. But after a couple of years studying art I got to appreciate it and also got to know the artist on a more personal note.
I love this sculpture with Paikea at the top and feel so privileged that Selwyn was one of my mentors and huge influence in my art making and graduating with my Doctorate.
What an awesome day.
