These past couple of days I have been missing and thinking about one of my great mentors Selwyn Muru. He was a big influence in my art making and supported me all the way through my Doctorate studies.

I so enjoyed creating this artwork. I will ever be so grateful to this most talented creative taonga (treasure).

He could play the piano, ukelele and the guitar and was also a  sculptor, painter, broadcaster, writer, singer, orator, tohunga, poet and had so many more talents. He would always quote Hone Tuwhare poems in such a beautiful deep expressive voice. He would always refer to some of his mates like Don Selwyn, Ralph Hotere, Fred Graham, Para Matchett and Arnold Wilson.

“The world is your stage” is what he would always say to me.

His birthday coming up too on the 6th September born 1937. This is my tribute to my Rangatira(Chief) Selwyn Frederic Murupaenga. I am humbled and grateful to be one of his students at Te Toi Hou Maori art dept he founded at Elam.

” Kia ora Selwyn”.
