I was born in Kawakawa and we lived out on a farm in Matawaia. We would eat boil up, which consists of fatty brisket, water cress, dough-boys, potatoes and kumara. Then we would pour fresh cream over the top like a tomato sauce. Warm home made bread with melting butter and dipped in jam and fresh cream.
From childhood to young adult growing up, my dinner plate was always full of mainly meat, potatoes bread and bananas. I always thought that was normal.
The past few years I have learn’t that the big secret in managing your diabetes is what we put in our mouth and how much. I still enjoy eating take away’s and need to constantly remind my self to eat proper food portions like 1/2 your plate should be full of vegetables, 1/4 plate of protein and 1/4 plate of carbs.
