This is another drawing from my unnamed collection of whanau. On the original photograph the name of the photographer is Chas Sorrell Dickens Street Napier 1882.
I enjoyed drawing this tupuna (ancestor). When I first started I set up my drawing materials and paper. I felt so fatigued and had no energy to start drawing. My cooked me a feed and I dosed off to sleep. I had a good power nap and woke up at 2am. As I started my artwork my light above me started flickering like a power cut. I paused a moment said a karakia (prayer) and carried on drawing.
My best buddy which is my cat Tama always sits next to me every night when I am creating my artworks and keeps me company. Tonight he came in walked around my legs and ran out back through his window and never came back.
I felt a special presence as I was drawing this tupuna. It was a confirmation for me that I need to find their identity.
If this person looks like your tupuna dated back 1882-83 form the Napier area please email me on my website.
