For Māori, water is the essence of all life, akin to the blood of Papatuanuuku (Earth mother) who supports all people, plants and wildlife. Water has a mauri and as such must be kept in its natural state as far as it is possible to do so. Water as wai ora,
the purest form of water, sustains, protects and enhances life. It is essential for the well-being and nourishment of all things whether it be in the physical or spiritual realm. Wai, or water, is a taonga (treasure) of paramount importance to Maori. Most, if not all Iwi (tribes) will have reference to a body of water whether it is a river, a lake, sea or a spring.
