Tonight we had our men’s group where we meet once a month. Our purpose is to help men live healthier lifestyles and to be better role models for our youth and families. We have had some awesome activities like camping, chartering fishing boats, group discussions on Gout, Diabetes and healthy cooking. Our discussion was on Lore vs Law.

Law means a rule or a collection of rules imposed by authority. Colloquially, the law means the police.

Tribal Lore is Maori knowledge or tradition passed from generation to generation.

Before the signing of the treaty of Waitangi. Maori were a thriving race especially as businessmen. They owned their own businesses and lands. They had their own lore which governed themselves.

As more European settlers moved in, it was necessary that had they too had a law for them. Because of colonisation, breach of the Treaty and land wars the crown has somewhat overtaken and have made their law for all.

The sad thing is that this history is not taught in schools as well as the Treaty of Waitangi.
